Richard Thomas was born in July 1920 at Middlesbrough. He joined the Royal Air Force in August 1940 serving as a Wireless Operator / Air Gunner in Coastal Command, taking part in the Battle of the Atlantic from 1941 to 1943. During this period he flew on a 1000 - bomber raid on Bremen and was a member of the crew which sank a U-boat off Iceland.
After the War he read Architecture at Cambridge University and the London Architectural Association, qualifying in 1951.
